2D Storybook UI/UX Design principles utilised

The design thinking behind this 2d storybook has emphasized the following UI/UX design principles as to provide the user with a seamless, functional and consistent user experience.

Placement

Because this story is using landscape mode to convey the story, emphasis has been to place all elements throughout the pages in logical areas so as to utilise all available screen real estate in a practical manner.  The bottom navigation is a good example of this, whereby the back page and next page button positions are placed in the most logical and comfortable thumb position for the user to navigate.

Law of proximity

The law of proximity best practices have been utilized with all the page elements to provide the user with clear visual separation between the core text areas, image areas and the navigation area.  An example of this is on the story pages whereby the story text box is on the left side and the right side displays the image.  Also with the navigation bar whereby all the functional components for the user are grouped together in a horizontally centered zone at the bottom of the page.

Consistency

The consistent layout (Mainly with the bottom navigation bar and with the story page left side text position) gives the user familiarity when progressing through the story (Especially when navigating through the pages and reading the story) which ultimately reduces friction for the user from a user experience perspective.

Enhanced User Control

The finer details of the user experience have been considered with the design to allow the user slightly more control over the sound.  The idea behind this is to allow the user to be able to toggle on or off either the background music or the voice-over narration at any time.  This has been achieved by implementing 2 x sound icons into the navigation bar on the inner sides of the page navigation buttons.  This is to essentially give the user a higher level of sound control with the storybook.

Note: This is an experimental and unconventional idea with sound control, and it goes against "The Norm" with accepted user interface design.  However, with enough time and user feedback, it may prove to be a creative paradigm shift with how users can have more sound control without impacting the overall user experience.

Nice Story! Here are some of the things that I noticed:

  • Good use of panels
  • consistent buttons and space
  • graphics that enhance the story
  • next and back buttons are not placed correctly
